San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White is recovering after being shot in the ankle during a post-Super Bowl gathering in San Francisco on Monday morning.

The shooting occurred at approximately 4:06 a.m. on the 1700 block of Mission Street, just hours after the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots.

The incident was reported by a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson, who confirmed the 27-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery.

According to reports from The Athletic, White was not involved in the verbal altercation between two groups that preceded the gunfire at the scene.

‘Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco. He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. 

‘We will provide further updates when appropriate. A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business. 

‘The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect. He is expected to be OK,’ the statement read.

White had been attending a celebration in San Francisco following the championship game, which took place 40 miles south at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Witnesses reportedly spotted White at the event wearing a New England Patriots hat, the team that originally drafted him in the second round of the 2023 draft.

San Francisco police officers arrived at the Mission Street location shortly after 4 a.m. and have since launched an investigation into the unknown shooter’s identity.

Panic has gripped the 49ers fanbase as this marks the second time in 18 months a player has been shot in the city, following the near-fatal attack on Ricky Pearsall.

Pearsall survived a chest wound in August 2024, and the team is now praying for a similar miracle recovery for White as he begins a lengthy rehabilitation process.

White had just finished a breakout 2025 season after being acquired via trade, recording 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks while providing critical depth for the 49ers.

The 6-foot-5 defender was originally a second-round draft pick by the Patriots in 2023, signing a four-year, $7.7 million contract that runs through the 2026 season.

During his collegiate career at Georgia Tech, White emerged as a defensive powerhouse, tallying 7.5 sacks in his final season before making the leap to the NFL.

White’s professional career includes 100 total tackles and 7.5 sacks, with his 2025 campaign seeing him play over 35 percent of the 49ers’ total defensive snaps.

The shooting remains a mystery as San Francisco police confirmed that the unknown suspect fled the scene and no arrests have been made in the ongoing manhunt.
